Does Petmeds guarantee their Heartworm medicine?
I have a friend who buys his meds from PetMed. He says that his dog has never missed a dose. The dog just tested positive for heartworms. PetMeds say that they will pay for treatment if a dog gets heartworms. Has anyone had experience with this? Also, what is the average cost of treatment?
They SAY they will pay for treatment, but they also say monetary limitations apply. If you check out the links, the list a cap of $500 under the Heartgard and Revolution links, so I doubt they would pay more than that for the other brands.

The average cost of treatment is around $1000. The cheapest I ever saw was $800 for a 25-pound cocker spaniel and the most expensive was close to $1500 for a 150-pound bull mastiff. These were both relatively non-complicated, stage 1 cases. A stage 4 case of heartworm disease would cost a lot more (but stage 4 cases are typically those who have been off heartworm preventative for years, so they probably wouldn’t qualify for the guarantee anyway).
And PetMeds make a big deal of all the “hassle” it is to get a refund from the manufacturer compared to them, but the reality is that most vets will do most of the work to fight to get that refund for you. And it will be a real refund of the cost of treatment; not some measly $500 that barely covers half the cost.
While I’m pleased that PetMeds will make some effort to guarantee their meds, the fact that they hide the fact that their guarantee won’t cover the real cost of treatment (except in maybe a few rare cases) is yet another of their shady marketing practices that continues to digust me.
