Pet transportation and quarantine USA -> Europe?

I have a 5 mnths old lab.
What would i need to take him to a permanent residence in a european country?
And what is the whole quarantine thing? – cuz somebody told me that pets are locked up for half a year and then they release them, and usualy they die in the quarantine process – is that true?

As for quarantine, yes, many rabies-free countries insist on it. It is not as bad as it sounds. When my husband was just a kid, his family had to live in the UK for a few years, as his dad was a civil servant working at a military base. They took their dog with them, and it was fine during quarantine – the family was even allowed to visit the dog. It survived just fine, and lived to return to the US and live many more years. You just need to check the laws of the country where you plan to move.
