I have a Maltese and got him at 6 weeks of age. He was house broken and did well for years. Here in the last

few weeks he has started to pee in the house. He pees outside and I let him out often but he will still pee in the house. One morning I let him out and 10 min later my husband left for work. As soon as he walked out the door my dog peed on the kitchen rug. Sometimes but not as much he will while we are both home. I put him in his cage with a soft bed and food and water of course while I am gone. We have another dog a poodle and she does not do this. Could my dog be marking his spot or is it some kind of separation anxiety? I do clean it up asap and use Pet Care products made for that and also shampoo the rug where he does it.

It sounds to me like the dog is more attached to your husband so he may have to with you take him out. No dog is housebroken at 6 weeks. If you have a chid do they use the washroom at that age? Anyone who tells you that a PUPPY is house broken at that age does not know what they are talking about. Also if you are going to crate train your dog since you both work I am a firm believer in not putting food or water in their crate. This confuses them. You have to resolve yourselves to feeding the dog in the morning and let it do its business about a half hour later. Then the dog should go in the crate. No food or water because depending on how old the dog is if they eat food and drink water in the crate they will have to go. It could just be my dog but she doesn’t like any cushions in her crate. She has an old blanket of ours which she pushes to the front. You also have to take the dog outside as soon as he does this and use a firm voice telling him NO. That is one of the first things I learned. If he gets the word NO it will be better. I know we like to think of them as humans but they are not and as with other training stay sit paw unless you show them that you are in control and boss and use a firm voice or word I find that if I snap my fingers or say making an annoying noise or word that worked for me. Don’t think it is bad to not to put food and water in the crate. Think of yourself after you eat or drink. Most of us need to go. It is no different with a dog. They can adapt to your schedule. You both have to be on the same page.
