Is heating a plastic pet tank harmful?

I only have 2 hermit crabs, and therefore i keep them in a small plastic terrarium. Now that it’s winter, I need to heat the tank to keep my crabbies warm, but is putting a small heat lamp/ heating pad above/ under the tank harmful – - will the plastic melt? even if I keep it at a decent temp?

if so, where could I buy a small glass terrarium… they seem to only come in huge sizes.

You should get a small under tank heater for reptiles and put it under approximately 1/3 of your tank so they have a choice on where they want to be. I don’t suggest a lamp because they are hard to control and they dry the cage out BAD. A lamp would be more likely to melt the top than a pad would. An under tank heater won’t melt your tank, I promise. Most reptile keepers use plastic bins like Sterilite and Rubbermaid for their reptiles and use under tank heaters or Flexwatt heat tape to heat with. I would suggest getting a cheap thermostat or building your own dimmer to control the heat, but some UTH’s have those built in already. Good luck.
