How can I make my cat stop shedding excessively?

She has long hair, and even though I brush it all the time, she still leaves hair all over the place. I was wondering if there is a way I can take care if it on my own because Grooming salons for pets are really expensive for my budget. I will try almost anything. >.<

The problem is – you’re BRUSHING it! Longhaired cats should never be brushed – they need to be COMBED. Brushes do little to remove the loose hair of the undercoat and can pull out and break top coat hairs.

Get a good quality steel-toothed comb like this http://www.fidoandfelixpetcare.co.uk/img/products/finecoarsecomb.jpg and comb the coat. The comb will gently remove all the dead, loose hairs of the undercoat and leave the top coat intact.

If this cat has a thick undercoat – like that of a Persian or Maine Coon – then you need to comb the coat at least every other day all year long.

If the cat has a light, cottony coat then it should only need to be combed about once a week once you’ve got the initial loose hairs under control.

You also should consider switching your cat to a healthier diet. Poor nutrition could result in excessive shedding. If you’re feeding your cat a cheap grocery store food made mostly of corn switch her to a better quality one with meat as the main ingredient and with little to no grain. And feed her canned food daily as well – MUCH more healthy.
