Have you ever had a standard poodle? What are they like to own?

Im going to get a new pet soon and I have it down to a poodle or giant schnauzer or papillon. What are the pros and cons of owning a standard poodle? Can i buy some shears and learn to do the puppy cut myself to cut down having to have to pay to have them groomed every 5 weeks? what is their fur like if you only have them groomed once ever two months? is that feasible or not? what other considerations are there?

Standard Poodles are GREAT DOGS!!!
I have never owned one, but, I know many.
I would own one, but, I would want to show it, and I’m not doing all that show grooming.
They make great family dogs. They are very smart. They were originally a waterbird hunting breed. So they are very easy to live with, like a retriever.
If you get any of these three breeds, you should get them from a reputable breeder that will mentor you through the grooming, training and care. Especially if you get a Giant Schnauzer or Standard Poodle.
The three breeds you mentioned have VERY different temperaments.
Go to a dog show or two and talk to owners of the breeds you are interested in. Find a local breeder if you can that will help you with your dog, the wait is well worth it. Here are some websites, the first will show dog shows in your area. Go to the show early, 9am or so, ask anyone there where to get a schedule and how to find the breeds you are looking for. Ask politely to talk to people when you see them with the breeds you want. Most good breeders WANT to educate people about their breed.
