Which type of ‘bark control’ collar are you asking about?
And in what way do you mean ‘harm’?

Depending on your skill of timing, or the reliability of the collar timing, you could seriously scare your dog, and she could connect that scare with what she was seeing or doing at the time…so you could be punishing good behavior, and missing the ‘bad’ behaviour, through poor timing. So ANY of the could ‘harm’ her mentally.

As for type, you get ones triggered by the vibration in her voacl cords as she barks, and others that you control with a remote control. Some emit ultrasonic ‘squeals’, some spray water, some vibrate, some spray mustard or citroenella, some give them electric shocks. ALL have the potential to malfunction, causing more confusion/fear/aggression than you were trying to counter in the first place! lol

There is NO substitute to getting to the bottiom of WHY your dog barks. What is her/his motivation? What is his/her reward for barking (Like, does the postman retreat? Great, reward! Or, do you call her/him to be quiet, thus giving the attention (s)he craves? Great, reward!). You need to think like your dog, and work out the motivation behind the barking, and what action the barking acheives. You need to address these things, and give the dog an alternative way of dealing with these things. Without knowing your specific dog, I can’t really say what alternatives may suit, but it isn’t usually too difficult to work out.

Also, on the whole, a dog with an active life is less inclined to be a nuisence barker. If they have plenty exersice for their body, and stimulation for the brain, they feel much less need to seek ‘amusement’ through barking.

Of course, it must be remembered that it is totally normal for dogs to bark at certain times, and it is us humans who have a problem with it! Barking dogs are simply being dogs. It’s up to us to help them use up their energy via pursuits that we find more convenient than barking.
