Got a log for a pet rat its made of pine ceder, alfalfa, and honey to hide in, chew, and eat. Is it safe?

Pine and cedar are softwoods that get their pleasant aroma from phenols which is one reason they are used for bedding. These phenols, however, are toxic to rodents. Not only can they wreak havoc with the respiratory system, but they can seriously damage the liver and kidneys. Also, phenols can cause skin lesions. On the other hand, pine that is kiln-dried pine is said to burn off the phenols; thus, a product made of treated pine is supposedly just as safe as a wood such as aspen. TFM is a favorite mouse forum I visit, and they have a discussion about kiln-dried pine being safe under the bedding section. You can read the details as follows:
