What dog breeds are good as family pet with young kids?

We are planning on getting a new puppy but would like something friendly with our 1 yr old. What breeds should we look for or avoid? We are planning to train it and be careful with the baby but still want to pick the best type for our family?

Go for a lab or retriever(or mutt of any kind – they are much more temperamental than purebreds).. Small ‘lap dogs’ can be very territorial and can have issues with kids (even when they are raised with the kids).

You can also visit a shelter – they are very good about ‘testing’ the dog to be certain about what type of family it would be good with (ie one with kids). They will also help you along the way if training issues arise.
