Why?
The penn plax aquarium nursery is not suitable for either a gravid female or growing babies.
The prefilter is just a sponge to stop fry being drawn in to a filter intake – any filter sponge with a hole in it will do the same job.

The book is rather outdated and breeding mollies is simple – put female with male = female is gravid.
Put female in decent sized nursery tank (20g + for sailfins, 10g + for standard mollies) with lots of egeria or water lettuce.
Take out female after dropping fry & feed fry well & keep water quality optimum.
Female will drop more fry in about a month.
