How do I teach my dog…?

…to know my name?

Chloe is very well-trained for 8 months old. She’s housebroken and knows all the basics (sit, stay, come here, lay down) as well as some of the more flashy stuff (paw, speak, jump, roll over, fetch etc…). She also knows practical things like hush, what is it, go potty, go outside.

So she is very quick to learn, and I think I’m a pretty good teacher. But does anyone know the correct methods of teaching dogs to know people by name? And if so, about how many names do they have the capacity to learn? (I know it’s different for every dog.) Best case, I’d like her to know the names of me and my immediate family and friends, about 10-15 names in all. Is that okay?

Any pointers are much appreciated!
Luckily, most of the names I want to teach her are one or two distinct syllables.

Instead of your name, try something simple, like mom or mamma. Also try and use the same tone in your voice. She will begin to recognize that tone and come to you. If your name is something like Elizabeth, thats too many syllables for your dog to understand.

My dog knows to come to me because my fiancee and I always say in the same tone (excited tone) “Go see mamma!” or “Go see Daddy!”
She also knows when its time to go potty because of the tone. I say a simple ” Pee Pee?” and she knows. I can ask her if she has to go empty her bladder in the same tone and she will understand. Your body language is equally important (if not more).

As far as the names of your friends, that will take time and patience. One of the important words in Dog Training is “Repetition”.
