tampons, menstrual cups, or reusable pads?

i have never used anything but disposable pads, and they are a pain in the butt. i was wondering if there are any more comfortable, hygenic, convenient options.

my main issues are the gross wet mushy feeling when the pad is full, and sometimes the leaks at night. i wanted to try using a tampon to feel cleaner, but im afraid it’ll hurt to put in. I hear menstrual cups are healthier, but i think they are bigger and will probably hurt more than a tampon.

if all else fails, im going to switch to reusable pads, because i hear they’re softer and they dont bunch between your legs like the disposables. i think id feel gross keeping them around before getting a chance to wash them, but i’ll get over it.

anyway, should i try the insertion options? is there anyone out there who hasnt had horrible pain putting it in for the first time? everyone ive talked to has.

I’d say if you’re going to try any internal option cups have far more advantages over tampons and aren’t anywhere as likely to cause pain. Menstrual cups are by far the best option, they’re hygienic and so there’re fewer precautions, so are more convenient – can be worn for 12 hours, from light to heavy flow, before your period, overnight and no need to alternate with pads, also cups don’t leak like tampons so no need to use pads as back-up.

Cups are not that big; when folded they’re little different to the size of a tampon, when open they’re not much different to an expanded tampon – cups are flexible, and different folding methods can make them smaller to insert. Your vagina is built to allow a whole human being through, it’s flexible so can easily take a cup without any pain, and unlike tampons cups are smooth so there’s no reason for there to be pain as long as you’re relaxed. I had a foster daughter who suffered from vaginismus so suffered agony when anything tried to go in her vagina, but after a little help she could use a cup without any pain. Tampons can hurt due to damage to the vagina by their drying effect and by the friction of inserting a dry tampon against moist and delicate vaginal walls, they can also increase cramps, and if inserted incorrectly this can cause cramping type pain – if you use tampons then go for cotton brands, they’re exactly the same as commercial only softer and don’t contain harmful ingredients. When using tampons you still have to use pads as tampons cannot be worn overnight, during light flow, and you’re supposed to alternate with pads, also most women use pads as back-up. Tampons are one of the worst options as they encourage bacterial growth, prevent vaginal cleaning, dry-out the vagina causing damage, and there are concerns over commercial brands due to harmful ingredients used – thus risk TSS, infections, increased cramping and potential long-term risks. The risks aside to say safe and hygienic there are precautions to follow that make them inconvenient, as well as needing to use pads with tampons you also have to be sure to use the right absorbency, change every few hours, not wear before your period, avoid commercial brands, avoid if you have infections, etc.

Reusable pads are a FAR better option to disposables.
Basically they let your genitals breath so no making the area hot and moist like disposables do, this along with the nice soft fabric also makes them more comfortable, and you’re right that they don’t move about as much as they fasten into your underwear differently, or you can get period belts that fasten around your waste (Reddy’s) or period panties which are underwear with pads built in (Lunapanties). In terms of feeling gross about having them around, consider that menstrual blood is clean, it’s no more dirty than vaginal discharge, which is also clean, but you are okay with keeping your used underwear in the wash basket, right? Just a quick rinse out and that’s that before washing them with the rest of your laundry, or you can always wash by hand. Also think about disposables sitting around in your trash, disposables encourage bacterial growth so tend to have a bad odour to them, where as with reusable pads there’s no bad odour to worry about.
