What is the difference between “training” and being a pack leader to achieve a healthy stability in a dog?
I hear and read a lot about how you have to be a pack leader to your dog for a healthy and stable relationship. What is the difference between this and training. I don’t understand? I’ve watch The Dog Whisperer before and he says a lot of things about being a pack leader. Actually, that is all he ever talks about and that is how he solves every single problem. I think a lot of the things he does is actually abusive. But, what is the difference between training and being a pack leader? And do I have to abuse my dog to be a leader?
Dogs need leadership; someone the dog can look up to as ranking higher in the household & can trust to protect it from threats outside the pack. Leadership is teaching a dog that is a different species & thinks, learns, behaves & perceives the world as a dog, how to live in a human household.
To do this a good leader projects calm authority & from day begins to train a dog that its owner controls every aspect of its life, including all the resources & territory. Rules are set & consistently enforced sets, the dog is taught good manners & obedience trained, so the dog is clear in its head what behaviour is expected of it.
Leadership is being someone the dog will wait to take direction & take its cue on how to behave in response to its owner’s commands – a dog that trusts its owner will remain responsive to commands when faced with a new or mentally challenging situation.
The owner leads & the dog follows, but a good leader will appreciate that every dog is an individual, & no two dogs will learn at the same pace or in the same way, & the training would be geared to the individual temperament of the dog, using the least force necessary to insure it reliably behaves in an acceptable manner.
Crushing a dog’s spirit with harsh handling or abuse is not leadership or training a dog.
Leadership & training go hand in hand.
