One Dog Shock
dog shock collars?
i have an aggresive dog who has bit two people. i was going to obedience school to try to get him for socialized and around people. i went to nine classes. well this last class we had to exchange leashes and my dog bit my class partner. Now my instructor wants to use a shock collar. This idea really scares me and i did about 5 hrs of research and i found alot of different opinions . The one website that you cannot exchange violence for violence and it makes the dog worse. Do you have any ideas or experince.
Shock collars should really be a LAST RESORT ONLY in my opinion and I am not so sure you are at that point yet. In the wrong hands I think they can do a lot of damage, and just like prong collars one needs to know how to use them correctly. I think their are too many people who rely on TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT over sound Dog Training techniques. I can’t tell you much without knowing your dog and what was going on at the times he has bitten, but be careful of a trainer who jumps to this as an answer without trying a lot more then 9 group work classes!! You need far more then basic obedience right now, and if your trainer only does basic training for groups he may not have the knowledge to deal with your dogs problems and is jumping to the shock collar because he is already out of other ideas!!! If it feels wrong, don’t do it until you have more info. I do know that some people swear it made the difference between a Good Dog or having it euth’d but you need to be COMFORTABLE this is the right move.
I would really really recommend you get a second opinion from another trainer who knows a lot about the breed of dog you have and has dealt with dog aggression extensively. Getting a dog to stop being aggressive takes more then group classes, you need to be a leader in everything you do at home. Training classes are more about training YOU to train the dog, so I am cautious of the kind of trainer who thinks the can fix your dog for you with a shock collar. You might want to get one on one instruction with a really good trainer before you use a shock collar. Find someone who will come to your home and see how you work with your dog there and how you might be doing some things day to day that inadvertently add to the dog’s aggression. You need to correct the reasons your dog is bitting, not trying a bandaid fix by using aversion therapy. It won’t address the underlying issues your dog has, and he may develop other issues. Dogs bite for many reasons, you need to understand why yours is before you can fix it. I would go somewhere else before I would believe a shock collar is the only option.
