Crate for German Shephard Puppy?
My German Shephard puppy is 12 weeks old and I really need to start crate training him soon. The thing is I have no idea what kind of crate to purchase. When visiting the closest pet supply store, I roamed up and down the aisles checking out the crates. Some are wire, some nylon and some were the plastic carrier ones. When I questioned the young sales clerk he said to purchase the one on sale but couldn’t explain why, just that there was a sale. He knew nothing about them. I know shepherds become a good size when full grown and I want to make sure the crate is something that lasts. any advice, product names, etc… would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Ha – you gotta love most pet store clerks – they haven’t a CLUE about pets!!
First off, don’t buy one at your local store. The prices are ridiculous plus they take up so much space stock is generally pretty limited. A really great place to get one is http://www.drsfostersmith.com The kind you should get is one of the wire ones. Do NOT get a plastic one. Not only is the airflow horrible through them but your puppy will probably get scared being in one. Those should only be used for their intended purpose – for air or car travel.
I purchased a bit more expensive fold-down model but this is a good one – http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=15280&N=2001+114010 I purchased the 48″ one but you may go a bit smaller for your pup. You mentioned that you wanted something that will fit him well full grown. Some people do tend to crate their dogs even after they’re housebroken but I didn’t do this. First of, he was housebroken so I wanted to reward him with the freedom of being able to move around the house and secondly, I thought it a bit cruel to keep him confined.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the wear and tear on a crate is pretty minimal so you can easily sell it to someone else once you’re done with it. I did so on eBay and found a local buyer and recovered about half the cost of what I paid for it. On that note, you might check your local craigslist.com or search eBay for someone selling theirs!
