Nylon Leash
border collie problem on a leash?
my border collie is 16 weeks. he has not had proper training yet because the classes weren’t on until next weekend. The other classes in my area were at the least and extra two hours drive away so don’t call me for the late training please. however, he is amazing on a leash. sure he pulls at little, he’s curious and likes to see whats out there, he pulls the first 10 mins or so but soon after, walks by my side, or just a tad in front. he’s super well behaved! but the trouble is when i want to run or jog with him. he will turn round and bite his leash, growl and stop walking. is this because the leash hurts him. we have tried 5 leashes. a retractable, thin chain, thich chain, puppy leash, and a long nylon thick leash and he’s the same on them all. any ideas what it could be, and will he grow out of it when he’s bigger. i wanted a border collie as a good running pal because i love my running and being in the outdoors! Any ideas, suggestions, solutions? thanks!
Like I said on the other one you posted (Hi, I have a border collie too. She is exactly the same. In my opinion, it’s because he isn’t 100% sure of the leash as he hasn’t had proper training. We’ve began our training already and the leash lessons are later on but for the time being, increase the pace of your walks so that he gets used to lots of speeds so that in time, he won’t realise you’s are running. Also, imagine if you were on a leash and someone a lot bigger was pulling and running behind you. It’s the motion of the run that scared him probably. At the classes ask for some advice. Also, maybe invest in a Training Leash at the sessions if any are available. Normally, there are one-to-one lessons so you and your collie can run along side with a trainer. It might help with future references when he’s off leash if he can run beside as you say you love running. Good luck with him!) lol
Sorry Lindsay B I totally disagree, yes a Border Collie does need a lot of stimulation, mentally AND physically, but what is a collie doing whilst he is at work? Herding, which is indeed RUNNING around. Yes they do it all day, but with like TenBooz says, this person loves to run, so I’m guessing, its a lot, not just ever other time. And at 16 weeks, a young age, the way TenBooz explains how he walks seems pretty good, so I’m also guessing they go walkies lots.
Its also too early for flyball or agilty just yet, that will damage his muscle growth etc.
