Nuts About Mutts

Nuts About Mutts
Why are people so down on “designer” dog breeds?

I was just researching Cavachons online and saw that someone asked about them here and people went nuts saying they were just mutts and a scam. What’s wrong with mixing two great breeds? Is there something I’m missing? Thanks!
What is BYB? And how do hybrids kill dogs?
re: “Wow. Where are you from?” Well, I’m from the land of people who like dogs but don’t know all there is to know about them. I’m from the land of people who don’t use the phrase BYB every day. I am a responsible person trying to find the best pet for my family. I am asking questions to learn more. When I see people attack Cockapoos, etc, as nothing more than mutts, I wonder what the issue is. Now I know — bad breeders who created unwanted dogs. I appreciate the thoughtful answers most have provided.

I wouldn’t necessarily say that people are being prejudice against mixed breed dogs also referred to as a mutt.

What people are commenting on for the most part is their need to educate some owners that unless a dog has only 1 breed within them they are not purebreds and definitely under any circumstances is not a breed, designer or otherwise.

There are some unscrupulous people who market their dogs as rare, designer or specialty dogs. Although there is nothing wrong with owning, adoring and loving a dog regardless of how many different breeds it took to make it. It is not a breed. These people “so called breeders” prey on the uneducated person and their knowledge of dog breeds or lack there of, to ask terribly high amounts of money.

Of course there are also the owners who do not care enough to keep an eye on their dogs and end up with accidental pregnancies of their dogs. Most times not knowing who the sire was to the pups. Some of which try selling them to make a profit due to their lack of being a responsible owner and having had their dogs spayed or neutered.

When you have mixed breeds or mutts the health of that dog has an uncertainty. There is no knowledge as to what health risk may or may not be in the future of the dog. Although many do not have any problems there are the ones that do and diagnosing them can be quite difficult.

The reason that their are so many dogs in shelters is that too many of these non-reputable breeders are breeding for the sake of breeding with no care or thought for the puppies health as they grow into adulthood.

Unfortunately in the world we live in too many people believe we have a throw away society, which includes any forms of life.

If less people breed whether it be mixed breeds or purebreds all of the dogs would be better off living in happy, loving homes as a part of the family for their entire lives.

This of course does not mean that everyone is this way but it is a real concern as the people who run and maintain those terrible puppy mills and thoughtless breeders are pulling in tons of money for these dogs. To them they are just jumping on the band wagon of a new trend to rake in the dough. These so called designer dogs are a fad and will at some point die out and unfortunately I feel sad for the pups that will end up euthanized or treated badly by bad owners.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with caring, loving and having a mixed breed, mutt as a part of your family.

It is however wrong for some people to exploit these dogs for their own benefit of making a dollar.

I have 8 dogs myself all of whom are well taken care of and loved. 6 of which are purebreds and 2 who are mutts. I do not love my purebreds any more than I love my mutts and spay/neuter any and all dogs that I do not plan on breeding.

I never breed my mixed breed dogs and only do limited breeding’s on boxers. Very limited as in 25 years of owning boxers I have only bred them 3 times.

A designer dog (mixed breed) is only letting people know that there is more than one type of breed within its dna to produce the dog.

Incidentally, as I’m sure you’ll be told often – a mix between dog breeds doesn’t constitute a new, actual, breed of dog, however people choose to name it. To become a “breed” (aside from official recognition), you need to be so many generations down the track that you’re no longer mixing breeds together – and (most importantly) the “new breed” breeds true. That is, produces offspring that consistently look a particular way, are a particular size, and have a definable temperament. This is not possible with mixes in the early generations – puppies in the same litter can end up with vastly different looks and temperaments, as some take after one or other parent more than the other. Just as is the case with any other mix (i.e. it makes no difference genetically if someone stuck two dogs of different breeds together, and gave them a cute hybrid name – or if two dogs of different breeds escaped their yards and did it all themselves. The cute name in that case would probably be mutt – but it’s the only difference ).

It is only when full consistency is achieved (takes many years and generations) that you can even start to think about creation of a new dog breed. And the consistency has to be verified over several more generations, until finally one might get recognition for a new breed.

Anyway, the point being, that whether a 2-way or a 3-way or whatever mix, that is what it is – a mixed breed dog. It would have some characteristics of each of its parents, but there is no real way of telling what each individual might inherit, or even how those traits might interact. It is unlikely to be consistently enough for you to be able to predict anything much from the characteristics of a similar mix.

"I love this cartoon Mutts "–Brooke Shields to Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show" "People who view pets as family members will rejoice in this collection."–"The Baton Rouge Sunday Advocate" about Cats and Dogs: Mutts II" Conventional pet wisdom says that there are cat lovers and there are dog lovers–and never the two shall meet. But if there’s one thing the two sides do agree on, it’s that they love Patrick McDonnell’s charming strip, "Mutts," "Mutts" has won the devotion of animal lovers and comics readers across the land. Fans love the charming humor the talented McDonnell provides, as well as his one-of-a-kind artistic style that stands apart on the funny pages. "Yesh " features Earl the dog, his pal Mooch the cat, and the plethora of other lovable animal regulars who pop in and out of their lives. Few people could conceive what animals are truly thinking until McDonnell gave us the antics and adventures of Earl and Mooch. In one series of strips, Earl reveals what pets think when their owners are late arriving home: "I must ration my dinner…who knows how long it will need to last?…The day?…The week?…The next two minutes?" His buddy Mooch declares after becoming stranded on top of a tree: "I need to reassess my goals." The delightful personalities of McDonnell’s animal stars have won the hearts and acclaim of readers the world over. Veteran cartoonist Charles Schulz called "Mutts" one of the best strips ever. The strip earned the National Cartoonists Society’s Comic Strip of the Year Award in 1996. In 1998 McDonnell captured the Swedish Academy of Comic Art’s Award for Best International Comic Strip Artist. "Yesh " celebrates the subtle humor and unparalleled styleof a strip that hearkens back to the classic strips of yesteryear.
