Dog Nail trimming/ filing? And other general grooming tips needed

I have a 4 month old CavaChon (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Bichon Frise mix). I’m finding out that it costs a lot of money to take him to the groomers (I expected to spend money but I was hoping to find tips on how to do things myself). I’ve seen ads on tv – they claim it’s easy to use, it’s a device that files the nails, an alternative to using dog nail clipper. Anyone care to share their experience with this? Also, how about dog hair cuts? Stores sell electric clippers, I know they come with attachments for different lenghts; for anyone with dog haircutting experience, what length/s work best for Cavachon? Thank you!

I have two Chipoos (Chihuahua/Poodle Mixes). I also used to take them to the groomer but it got very expensive. I now do all of their grooming by my self at home. I bought electric clippers at PetSmart, dog shampoo, brushes, ear cleaner, etc. It has worked out great. My husband even set up a table in our basement when I can groom them. They love it.

About the nails…I just received (this week actually) a new device to file their nails, the Peticure. I have read that clipping their nails is not the best for them and mine hated it. I previously had been filing them with a file instead of cutting them but that took FOREVER! I have used the new Peticure which is just like one of those electric nail sanders you can find at PetSmart/Petco, etc exepct it has a safety guard on it to protect their feet and nails. So far they don’t mind it and it works great!
