Can anyone help me interpret this essay question? i know its sort of long but please bear through it?
Essay question:
How does the play illustrate the paradoxthat Arthur Miller highlights in Act 1: “for good purposes, even high purposes, the people of Salem developed a theocracy, a combine of state and religous power whose function was to keep the community together, and to prevent any kind of disunity that might open it to destruction by material or ideological enemies. it was forged for a necessary purpose and accomplished that purpose. But all organization is and must be grounded on the idea of exclusion and prohibition, just as two objecs cannot occupy the same space. . . The witch-hunt was a perverse manifestation of the panic which set in amoung all classes when the balance began to turn toward greater individual freedom “(9)?
The argument will be if arthur Miller succeds presenting the Puritan lifestyle as inherently paradoxical.

Here is the background: Ministers were looked to for guidance by the judges, who generally had no legal training. These ministers set out looking for witches with a great zeal. There were societal differences between the accused and the accuser. Tibuta was black, a slave, and a good first choice (the devil was also depicted as black as were witch garments). She told the girls entertaining stories in the afternoons when much of the work was done. In many cases, the accusers stood to gain the property of the convictions of accused witches. Also, the accused and the accusers generally took opposite sides in a congregational schism that had split the Salem community before the outbreak of hysteria. Property fights and congregational feuds played a major role in the witch hunts as well as societal positions.
The essay is stating that in order to keep the community a cohesive unit any disagreement and individual opinions (freedom) had to be eliminated. In Salem, it led to hysteria and panic.
Note: Fraudo only chose to point out the fear of communism. I guess Fraudo must have communist tendencies as there were and still are many such fears in the history/current events of man.
