Is this enough equipment?

Do I have enough blankets and sheets for my horse. I’m going to show him competitively this summer so will these be enough? Also is this enough all together? Next year I am going to clip him in the winter.

Yours has more than mine or most at my barn have, and they all do breed circuit (either AQHA, ApHA, or PHBA) and several of them do World Shows (and a couple are PHBA world champions).

It’s not so much about what you have, but how you use it. Use blankets in the winter to keep your horse slick and shiny. If the weather is cold, layer blankets and the hood. If it’s hot, but you want him to be clean and free of fly bites, use a light sheet or a fly sheet.

My horse wears a light sheet on cool days. If it’s cold, we throw a heavyweight blanket on top of that. If it’s really cold, we’ll add a heavyweight hood. During the summer, he doesn’t wear anything, but he’s turned out by himself so he generally doesn’t get beat up. I have a cooler that I’ll throw over him at shows while we’re waiting. The one thing I do have that I couldn’t live without is a lycra hood. I use it in any weather before shows, after I’ve bathed and banded him. It isn’t too hot, so I can use it in the summer, and it can go underneath a hood or other blankets in the winter. It just keeps him clean and makes the mane lie flat.

Save your money and use what you have–most of it can be combined if necessary, or used as needed.

If you use a half pad every time, you might want an extra one for showing so that it stays clean, or just to have as a backup. I don’t use one, so I don’t have any.

I generally only use one jacket. I do actually own two others, but they are older ones and I haven’t used them in a long time. I haven’t gotten rid of them because they still fit and I never know when I might use them, but one is generally fine if you take care of it. Just don’t put it on until the last minute and keep it in a garment bag when you aren’t wearing it. You might want to invest in several shirts, though–you’ll want a fresh shirt each day of a multi-day show, and they get stained/dirty/sweaty/worn more easily.
