To Filipinos only: What can you say about having English as a medium of instruction in elementary education?

Usually in schools in the Philippines, the use of English as the medium of instruction to elementary students is dominant or even highly favorable. But, there are instances that this has positive and negative effects on the Filipino youth. So what’s
your stand? Are you pro-English or anti-English as a language to use in teaching elementary kids?

Heyy, I’m a kid in the Philippines. So that’s the viewpoint I’m about to give you! =).

I actually attend an international school, so I guess I don’t really count now. But I did go to a local school for the first 5 years of my life, and I was definitely raised in an English-speaking atmosphere. At my local school, they taught all subjects (except for Filipino itself) in English which effectively influenced my classmates and I to converse in English.

In my opinion, the fact that the more dominant language amongst the teenagers (at least from what I know) is English makes us more worldly and exposes us to more. Americanization in the Philippines is pretty unbelievable, what with Krispy Kreme having just come in, and most other household name brands. The TV programs available to us are in English, and the stores we shop in are definitely imported from the west. In a way it can be seen as a positive thing because it is developing our country; getting us closer and closer to the North divide of the world solely through language.

However, the negative impacts are pretty evident when you see the Filipino youth forgetting their heritage and desperately seeking all that it takes to be caucasian. Believe me, it happens. I am very proud to be Filipino, but I think it only really hit me when I moved to an international school. The youth still in local schools are forgetting the importance of sustaining the culture in the Philippines. It’s an almost overwhelming factor, the fact that English is such a dominant and favoured language.

Overall, I think it’s got both its positive and negative effects. I think the Filipino language should be more strongly enforced upon the youth, yet we should still be encouraged to keep up with English since it can get us far.
