how to get into large animal veterinary med school?

im a sophmore in high school and i want to become a large animal Vet. i want to know how important it is to get involved in things like 4H and FFA. What steps can i take while im in high school to help me get into vet school. And then what i need to do to after high school?

getting involved in 4h and ffa looks great on applications and gives you expereince.
Vet schools don’t look at your high school grades, but you still have to do well enough to get into a good school.
once in your undergraduate school- take lots of animal science and biology courses. Get involved with the prevet club and any other animal related clubs they may have. get involved in undergraduate research. And to even apply to vet school you are required to have worked/volunteered for a vet (any species).
You will be given an advisor in undergrad who will give you more info.
It is a plus on your side that you want to work with large animals, there is a huge lack of large animal vets and not many students are interested in working with them.

There are a few vet schools that accept people from high school (so another reason to get really good grades). You still have to do undergrad work, but if accepted to their program, after completing your undregrad courses with decent grades, you automatically get into their vet school.

Avma.ORG has a list of the vet schools under their education link. Each school has their own requirements.

Basically take a heavy course load of challenging courses, do well, work with as many species as posible, get involved with research and of course all schools want diversity and well roundedness so do some other activities non school or non animal related.

Oh-one more thing, when looking for undergraduate colleges, look for ones that have colleges of agriculture. These tend to be stronger in veterinary related courses. (university of connecticut, purdue university ect… many land grant univiersities have this)
