Do i have to clip my cocker spaniel?

i was planning on getting my cocker spaniel clipped, as i thought it was the best thing to do since i am not going to show her, and don’t really want to be hand stripping her. i have just heard of Mars Coat King and wondered can i use it without clipping or hand stripping? help?

Most people clip their cockers, because to be honest, they’re too lazy to maintain a proper cocker coat. Clipping a dog’s coat short can actually make them hotter as it’s the undercoat that causes a dog to overheat not the guard hairs, and it’s the guard hairs that get cut short when you clip. Guard hairs actually reflect UV rays, protecting the dog from overheating and from getting sunburnt.

Back to your original question, you can use the Mars Coat King, but after using it for a while it DOES damage the coat. Of course the best course to go is to have your dog handstripped, but for some it’s too expensive/labour intensive. Since you’re not showing, but want to maintain the coat I’d suggest you try a little trick that isn’t as good as stripping by hand, but does just about the same thing, just not as effectively. Take a comb and weave a rubber band through the teeth. The rubber band catches all the undercoat that’s ready to come out and dead hair and does not cut/break the coat like a Mars Coat King does. Remember to wait until the coat is ready to come out before stripping otherwise it will prove uncomfortable for the dog.

Clipping is considered “going over to the dark side” for Cocker owners. Once you clip, you’ll probably have to clip the dog for the rest of its life since clipping ruins the texture of the coat. Stick to hand stripping, the rubber band method, and tidying up with straight shears and thinning shears if you want to maintain your Cocker’s beautiful coat.
