What size front speakers are standard for a 2002 Subaru legacy/liberty?

I am looking at changing my standard speakers for some decent quality ones. What size do I need to fit nicely without altering the car at all. Also will there be enough room for the larger magnet at the rear for after market speakers?

The front speakers are 6.5″ in diameter. The mounting depth is just a tiny bit less than 3″, so there’s lots of aftermarket speakers that will fit OK without interfering with the window glass. The factory speakers are mounted with 3 screws to a rigid plastic shroud that covers the top half and shields the magnet from rainwater getting into the door panel. Speakers with very big magnets may hit the shroud and not fully seat. In that case, you can add a spacer or cut out the back of the shroud where it contacts the magnet.

On one of the Subaru forums (I forget which one, but it was subaruforester.org, scoobytruck, or perhaps NASIOC?) where a guy was selling spacers cut specifically for different models of speakers. You might want to browse around one of those forums and see what they say about aftermarket speakers in Subarus.
