Lymphoma In Dogs Treatment

Treatment for Lymphoma?
My 12 y.o. cattle dog mix was diagnosed with lymphoma Dec 09. Has anyone had any successful naturopathic methods of treatment? Presently she is on a small daily dose of prednisone. I have read that grains increase the production of cancer cells. Therefore, I am making 75% of her food. (Supplementing with meats and green and orange vegetables. Also, daily cod liver oil supplements.
Am interested in finding out what people have tried, what worked and what didn’t.
Thank you very much.
If you used chemo treatment, what side effects were there and how did it effect the quality of life?
Ive had dogs with cancer they generally don’t live much longer with or without treatment your going to end up back at the Vet soon anyway and the amount of time if any that this extends the life of your dog it looks miserable. You have to make a judgment call whether or not its worth the huge vet bills to make any such attempt. People and animals die that’s just how it is. From experience Ive only seen cancer treatments at vets lead to a dead animal and a huge loss of money we didn’t have.
Ask your vet though does he seem optimistic? I haven’t seen a dog come back from cancer but who knows.

Hodgkin Lymphoma $219 This book provides a well-illustrated, comprehensive, and up-to-date account of Hodgkin lymphoma. Epidemiology, pathogenesis, and the role of the microenvironment are examined in detail. The initial clinical evaluation and use of staging systems are fully discussed, and prognostic factors are carefully considered. The various treatment options for first-line and relapsed Hodgkin lymphoma are presented, including the newly available treatments for recurrent disease and the management required in special clinical circumstances. Given the very high cure rates and the young age of many patients, there is an increasing need to develop better individually tailored treatment strategies that will help to avoid both early and late side-effects of treatment. Such strategies receive due attention, and clear guidance is provided on the handling of Hodgkin survivors. This book will be of great value to hematologists, oncologists, and all others with an interest in Hodgkin lymphoma. |

Living with Lymphoma: A Patient’s Guide $3.95 When neurobiologist Elizabeth M. Adler was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, she learned everything she could about the disease, both to cope with the emotional stress of being diagnosed and to make sure she made the best possible decisions for her treatment. In Living with Lymphoma, she combines her knowledge of lymphoma — both scientific and personal — with the desire to help other patients come to grips with this complex, and often baffling, disease. Adler thoroughly explains the disease, describing the many different kinds of Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, the wide range of symptoms, and the various treatment options available. Convinced that understanding lymphoma’s biological basis will help patients make better treatment decisions, Adler explains basic cell biology and how the immune system functions. Readers will gain sufficient background to understand and evaluate medical literature, and to ask their physicians questions specific to their own needs. In the introduction, Dr. Michael R. Bishop of the National Institutes of Health provides a physician’s perspective on the delicate nature of doctor-patient relationships in the context of a life-threatening disease — especially the importance of patient education and open communication in making decisions about treatment options and quality of life. Drawing on her scientific expertise and personal journey — as well as her empathy, passion, and humor — Adler has created a valuable guide for people with lymphoma and the people caring for them. |

Lymphoma and Leukemia of the Nervous System $168.61 Lymphoma and leukemia of the nervous system may be defined as direct or indirect involvement of the central or peripheral nervous systems by these malignancies. The diagnosis and management of these conditions is the subject of this book. In the first part of the book the focus is on primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL), an uncommon type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma confined to the nervous system. The first two chapters of the book are an overview of the lymphoid malignancies and leukemias for non-oncologists. This introduction is followed by chapters on the pathology, epidemiology, diagnosis and management of PCNSL. These chapters review PCNSL in "immunocompetent" hosts as well as in the setting of immunosuppression. The management of patients with PCNSL involves treatment regimens that are different than the typical approaches used in patients with primary brain tumors or with systemic forms of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The optimal treatment for patients with PCNSL has yet to be defined and several fundamental therapeutic questions, including the optimal role of radiation and other consolidation therapies, are unresolved. In the final chapters of this section a number of special topics including ocular lymphoma, neurolymphomatosis and intravascular lymphoma of the nervous system are reviewed. In the second part of the book the neurological complications of the lymphoid malignancies and leukemias are reviewed. The neurotoxicity of therapies for lymphoma and leukemia are also covered in this section of the book. Brain, epidural and leptomeningeal metastases are examples of direct involvement of the nervous system while paraneoplastic complications are an example of indirect involvement of the nervous system. Although exceptions exist the prognosis is usually poor once lymphoma or leukemia involves the nervous system. Prevention of neurological complications with better systemic therapy and, possibly, prophylactic intrathecal chemotherapy are areas of active investigation. The diagnosis and management of patients with lymphoma and leukemia of the nervous system involves an interdisciplinary team of hematologists, oncologists, radiation oncologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons and pathologists. A single source of information regarding this group of diseases and complications will hopefully serve as a useful resource for these physicians. |

Advances in Lymphoma Research $603.8 The process by which the oncology field moves forward seldom involves dramatic breakthroughs. Frequently, what appears at first glance as a breakthrough can result in a modest step forward. Several steps forward eventually add up to a major advance, but this goes unnoticed due to the slow nature of this process. Advances in Lymphoma Research discusses several of the steps that are clearly having a positive impact on the field of lymphomas and will soon make a major difference in the therapeutic results. We are in the middle of an explosion of knowledge about the biology of cancer. Lymphomas are no exception to this. Several recent advances in the understanding of the biological features of these disorders are beginning to bear fruit in regard to potential clinical applications. The Editors of this volume hope that the readers will be convinced after reading Advances in Lymphoma Research that although the pace has been slow, there have been clear advances in this field, some of which are already benefitting our patients and others that soon will. What You Need to Know about Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma $27.59 Original publisher: Bethesda, Md.]: U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, 2007] OCLC Number: (OCoLC)503000112 Subject: Cancer. Excerpt: …Treatment Your doctor can describe your treatment choices and the expected results. You and your doctor can work together to develop a treatment plan that meets your needs. Your doctor may refer you to a specialist, or you may ask for a referral. Specialists who treat non-Hodgkin lymphoma include hematologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists. Your doctor may suggest that you choose an oncologist who specializes in the treatment of lymphoma. Often, such doctors are associated with major academic centers. Your health care team may also include an oncology nurse and a registered dietitian. The choice of treatment depends mainly on the following: The type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma ( for example, follicular lymphoma ) Its stage ( where the lymphoma is found ) How quickly the cancer is growing ( whether it is indolent or aggressive lymphoma ) Your age Whether you have other health problems If you have indolent non-Hodgkin lymphoma without symptoms, you may not need treatment for the cancer right away. The doctor watches your health closely so that treatment can start when you begin to have symptoms. Not getting cancer treatment right away is called watchful waiting. If you have indolent lymphoma with symptoms, you will probably receive chemotherapy and biological therapy. Radiation therapy may be used for people with Stage I or Stage II lymphoma. 12 |
