All the important stages of life are divided by a Rite of Passage. Do you agree of disagree?

In Anthropology there are the Rites of Passage (A Van Gennep) who devised a plan that gets you through each life stage.
For example, for the process of having a child it would be,
The old status – Non-parent
Rites of Separation – Conception of the baby
The Liminal stage – Being pregnant
Rites of Reincorporation – The Birth
The New Status – Being a parent

I would largely agree with this. Van Gennep’s theory is often combined with Victor Turner’s notion of “liminality”, which is a useful tool for understanding rites of passage better. Turner explains that there is always a liminal phase during these rites of passage, that separate you from what you were, from what you will become after the rite is finished. These liminal phases (particularly in the tribal cultures anthropologists used to study most) are often dangerous to the individual, as oftentimes they would have involved exposing oneself to the spirit world or something along those lines.
While those types of rites do not necessarily exist as such in modern, North American society for instance, we still do have rites of passage – they just may not come across as such. Think of becoming an adult, as another person mentioned. While you may not have a community initiation, generally it is believed that you become an independent adult when you turn 18. This is a rite of passage, even if just a formal, bureaucratic one that doesn’t necessarily register with everyone. Turning 19 or 21, depending where you live, can also be an important one, because then you’re allowed to legally buy alcohol.
In these instances, the liminal phase could be your whole teenage life, up to that point. There’s nothing saying a liminal phase can’t last for years. So if you look at in that light, the rite of passage is a long ordeal, but one that isn’t necessarily as (potentially) traumatic as childbirth or even death. Rites of passage are everywhere, but just not necessarily immediately recognizable.
