How do I go about getting my dog licensed as a service dog? I am agroaphobic, afraid to leave the house alone

I read in my dog fancy that my dog can become a service dog to help me go to the store etc. but they did say how.

It’s been my understanding that there is no overarching licensing organization for service dogs. This can be a plus and a minus because it means you can’t just flash a badge and have store owners recognize that your dog is a service dog. People I know that use service dogs for similar things as you mention do mention the need for a thick skin because some people are downright rude. They are not legally allowed to ask you certain questions, like they can’t ask you what your disability is.

The first thing I would do for more information is seek out groups on Yahoo! that can give you much more specific information and where people can share their own experiences. I just found the below link by searching groups.yahoo.com for service dogs, and you could also try search for assistance dogs:

One thing you’ll absolutely need to do is make sure that your dog is very well trained and socialized. Ideally he has a “go potty” command where you can get him to go to the bathroom on cue when you need him to. Expect to buy a service dog vest (or badge if it’s a Small Dog) to identify him as a service dog.

It may be recommended that you take him through tests like CGC (Canine Good Citizenship) and TDI (Therapy Dog International), which are very basic tests of temperment and behavior. CGC won’t guarantee your dog can cut it as a service dog, but if he can’t pass pretty easily, it may be an uphill battle to consider him as a service dog. Here is the list of activities for CGC:

It’s not necessary that your dog be sent away for special training for the kind of service work you’re talking about as long as you’re willing to do some of your own training. You will, however, have to objectively consider whether your dog is suitable for service work. Good luck!
