Has illegal human medical experimentation ever led to a cure for something?

I mean the kind of experimentation that went on during WW2 (e.g. Dr Mengele) and also experiments performed in 3rd world countries and on under-privileged minorities. From a scientific stand-point it seems like a medical researcher’s dream, since you don’t have to adhere to regulations about health and safety of the test subjects, but has it ever led to any important medical discovery, a new drug or something?

When the allies came to free the camps – the solidier’s first priority was securing the information resources for study by allied command. Many of these records – because they recorded such hellish attrocities (with names and dates) – were burned. Fortunately a great deal was salvaged or otherwise saved.

Modern medicine owes an incredible debt to these documents. Modern surgical procedures were adapted to incorporate information learned from these records. Heart/renal transplantation surgeries for example, advanced by many years with the details of barbaric torture and ultimately death of many, many thousands of people.

Beauty products used today owe a debt to the information gleaned from this same source – as does skin-graft and reconstructive surgeries. Even something as common-place as blood-transfusion is indebted to these times of butchery.

It can never be said that anyone was cured – but the details kept allowed for enormous improvement in surgical techninques and technologies. Improvements in mid-wifery has improved the child-mortality rates as birthing-techniques have changed. There are certainly people alive today who might have otherwise been considered still-born and beyond hope.
