Meaner than a junkyard dog…?
Orange Wing Amazon Parrot that attacks suddenly and without provocation. You can be scratching his head and he’ll suddenly roll his eyes back and turn on you, biting hard enough to draw blood. He’ll attack while you’re feeding or watering him. No warning. He won’t let you pick him up and getting him out of the cage do clean up requires heavy leather gloves which he has bitten through.
How do I get him to stop?
Do not hit a bird. This will cause major mental instability and you will NEVER get him to come around. He probably views you hands as the enemy- so he WILL bite if you try to pet him, even if you don’t go any further then the beak.
Do not yell or scream at him, or he will enjoy your reaction, and may possibly pick up a screaming habit, and those are hard to break.
If a bite makes you go away, he will continue to do so, and a sharp feather fluff is a warning shot. Pay attention to the body language- and with Amazons, watch the pupples of the eyes. They will turn into pin-prick size when they are warning you. The head down, hissing or a sound like a purr and wings held from the body as he watches you, or a foot up means “stay away”. Sometimes, you will not get all of these at once, so be aware that he IS trying to warn you that you are invading his personal space. Slowly pull your hand away and ask “Why are you doing that?” and say “Calm down” in a soft, soothing voice. This helps to convince him you do not mean harm.
Most of all, do not get into his cage with him in it. The cage of a bird is a temple in our home, and if he bites you while your hand is in there, just keep out. It’s not wise to try to show athority and punish him for wanting to be left alone. He needs a place to run if he’s scared or tired, and if it isn’t his cage, fear will turn into aggression. Show him you respect his privicy by only entering when you REALLY have to (when he’s in distress) and when he’s not in. Cleaning his cage and changing food and water is a practice I do for my Cockatiels when they are not in their cage. This is a mutual thing between a bird and owner. He will understand, and respect you for leaving him alone.
Leave the door of his cage open and allow him to go out at his leisure. This will give you the cue he wants attention, and you are not intruding in his space.
It just takes time and patience. Any time spent with him will be a good gesture- even if it’s just watching the TV. You need to get him used to your hands. The way to a birds heart is through their stomach. Millet sprays, whole-grain cereals (in moderation) or a favorite fruit or vegetable will help. Once you can get him feeding from your hands, he won’t be so apt to bite- these are the hands that feed him. Having him around (with his own food of course) when you are eating will help found ate a flock mentality.
Keep the treats to just interaction time so he gets the idea that with you around, he gets something good. Talk to him like a person, not as a pet, and this will reinforce good behavior. By not running when he screams and not showing it hurts when he bites (I know it hurts- my right hand was mauled by an Amazon, but I love him just the same 
it will keep the progression of these behaviors to a minimum.
