How can we get our friendly 13 month old dog to stop jumping and barking at people who come to our house?
My dog is a lab/hound mix, 13 months old. It is very friendly and gets overly excited when people come to our door. Even if she knows them. If people come inside the house it is a disaster, she barks and lunges at them. Putting her in the backyard or in her kennel does not work as she will bark very loudly. It is getting frustrating because we can’t have people over. After 5 minutes she calms down but she is scary until that time. I have tried to read books and went online but I don’t know how to stop this. I have put her on a leash and walked her to the door and this has not worked. She won’t bite anyone but she did jump up on my mom and hurt her leg. She is about 50 lbs, maybe less, a medium sized dog.
Firstly, let me say that take everything you read on the Internet with a grain of salt. Don’t believe everything and do NOT try everything you read.
I think you’re first stop should be to your Vet. You should also try to find a PROFESSIONAL trainer in your neighbourhood. Many will come visit you and offer advice for very little money (perhaps $50 to $100? I’d guess). To me, it’s money worth spending.
Now, after telling you not to believe anything you read, here’s my opinion
I have personally owned a few dogs in my life, and have just gone through training a puppy. All dogs love to bark. All dogs love to jump. It’s in their nature. The trick here is to teach your dog when it’s OK to bark and jump and when it’s not OK to bark and jump. Now, I can’t stress this enough. Do not, under any circumstances, knee your dog in the chest. You CAN cause damage. One over-zealous jump from your dog into your knee can, and will, cause damage. Don’t be stupid. Also, this cockamamie crap about a “Negative Painful Experience and Harsh Voice” is just, well, crap. Negative PAINFUL experience??? What the hell??? Don’t be stupid. Vinegar is also an acid. I would not want that in my eyes, would you? Use this idea with caution, too. Using pain as a training method will only cause your dog to resent training, and resent you. You run the risk of training your dog to become fearful and timid (both can trigger aggression at times when they get scared). You want a happy and confident dog, not a scared and frightful one. Pain doesn’t work.
So, what can you do? Two things. Teach jumping and barking as a trick. Actually TEACH your dog to jump, on command. Actually teach your dog to bark, on command. Lots of treats and lots of rewards when he does it for you, when YOU want him to! That’s important, because it gives him a proper time & place to jump and vocalize (which are things they love to do). Also, you want to teach your dog (not at the same time you’re teaching him to jump and bark), that the door is no big deal. Here, you may need the help of a family friend or neighbor. Over and over and over (patience and consistency), have people come to the door and walk in. At first, he will go crazy, but gently calm him (with treats, food, or whatever motivates him). It will take endless patience. Persist. It will work. You will need some help here, you can’t do this alone.
If gently calming him doesn’t work, one thing that tends to work with many dogs, is that when they mis-behave, ignore them. No attention! Don’t yell at them, don’t scold them (and, please don’t ever hit them or hurt them!!!). Ignore them.
Just some ideas. I hope they help. Research some professional local dog trainers in your city, and give them a call.
