My puppy hates his leash and collar and what stop biting it?
My new puppy is about 10 weeks old, he’s a maltipoo. He HATES his new leash and collar. All he does is bite it. How do I help him adjust to it? Also, he bites me a lot, how do I make him stop? How do I show him that I’m the boss?
Get the dog used to the collar first. Put the collar on every time you play with the dog. This will associate the collar with fun and soon be a marker that is enjoyed. Once done start the Leash Training.
It’s very common for a puppy to not want to walk on a leash. It’s a very foreign concept. Be patient and don’t force it. Start by tying a short piece of cord to the dogs collar when playing (get him used to wearing the collar first). Engage in play to distract the dog from this item. Over the course of a few days, increase the lenght until part of the game is to drag a 4 foot piece of cord around the room. Then pick up the end of it and follow the dog. Give very slight directional pressure while encouraging the dog to you with a reward and that should be about it. Remember to praise for the wanted behavior even if it is as simple as walking on a lead.
Biting is a normal thing for puppies and is in fact how they learn bite inhabition. The most effective way is to do the same thing that happens to them in their litter.
1. Make a loud high pitch noise to emulate a squeal
2. break off all interaction including touch and even eye contact for 1 to 2 minutes
3. return to the activity as if nothing happened.
Repetition and consistency is what works here. If EVERY time i bite too hard, the fun stops then I will learn to stop biting so hard.
