Leash Black
My 5 year old black lab dog pulls on the leash. I tell him no and pull back. What else works?
He is pretty big and when he sees a tree, he pulls me to it to smell it. I can’t stop him. I say No. I try to hold him back. Also he jumps out of the car when we get to the park. He will not wait. He pushes me out the door. I tried to pause and he goes nuts and gets more frantic. Help.
I have a large 70 lb Pit Bull that does to this kind of stuff to me too. If she sees a squirrel, I may as well as let go. (Not really, but I need to brace myself for a big jerk!)
I’m not knocking the prong collar, but it did not work for me because my dog has so much loose skin around her neck and she would just let me choke her and cough. It was not worth the effort for me.
There are many types of different training items. I have posted a link so you can see what some look like. I’m in the market for a harness-type contraption that clips to the leash at the dogs chest, so when she starts pulling, it turns her shoulders around toward me. I have heard other people with Large Dogs in my neighborhood recommend this for me. The Gentle Leader didn’t work for me either… my dog just pulled me with her body going forward and her head turned to me. She’s a weirdo! LOL!
In addition, I have signed me and my dog up for training classes to work on some behavioral things, not so much on the ‘party tricks’ that I don’t care about. We have most of those things covered already.
I take my dog to the dog park and I use the same commands every time I open the car door. So find what words will work best for you two and use them always. When my dog doesn’t listen or starts to bolt, I brace the door and start to close it until she backs up. Here’s what I say (in a calm low voice), “Wait” or “Just a minute” and she has learned that when I say this, she stops pushing me around. In addition, I’m the kind of person that talks to my dog a lot when I’m doing things, ie: “Let me put the leash on. Just a minute. Wait.” Then it’s, “okay” in a higher pitched voice. Give praise when he does good things to reinforce the deed. Keep the leash tight enought only so he can get out of the car and doesn’t give room to get a running pull before your arm gets pulled off.
We all handle our dogs in different ways, but this is my experience. It’s not necessarily traditional and trainers have told me that I am not using the correct language for commands, but she didn’t have a language before I gave it to her and it works for me.
