Large Retractable

Industrial engineers? I need to make an item using a retractable shade.?

I was going to use a standard retractable shade roller (window shade), but the diameter is too large. How can I go about making a roller shade that is small in diameter. Would it be hard to create a spring mechanism? Any help you can give would be very appreciated.

As I recall, roller shade springs do not go the full length of the tube and are mounted around a wooden dowell rod. At that position there is a solid piece of wood inside the tube. The rest of the tube could be cut off there and the solid piece might be drilled so that a smaller diameter extension tube or rod can be mounted there and glued in place.
This will be the weakest place in the device and will probably need reinforcement, but that depends on how you are going to use it.
You may need to dismantle one roller tube to see if this is the case. If I am wrong, Oops, sorry, I am just an old Industrial Engineer.
