If you allow two magnets to stick together, will they be like one large magnet with 2x the strength?

Will it be 2x as powerful? Hold metal 2x as strongly? Attact objects from 2x the distance?

It depends on what kind of magnets and how you stick them together.

Two bar magnets stacked end to end will have almost twice the magnetic moment (but spread out more).

If you stack them 69-like with the NS and SN ends together, they’ll pretty much cancel out.

Other geometries will get other results. The key thing is the superposition principal. The field of two magnets is the vector sum of the field of 1 (assuming that neither magnet is actually inducing a field in the other). This is why a slinky shape makes a good magnet–it’s like the sum of all the individual rings.
