Kennel Cough Treatment

Adopting a puppy with kennel cough any advice.?

I am in the process of adopting a whippet X lurcher pup from the local RSPCA sheis about 14/16 weeks old. She has kennel cough but the Vet at the rescue centre is not giving her any treatment at the moment as she does not think it would be of any use for her. What should I do about this she is very shy and does not like the other dogs barking do you think that coming to my home and not being kept in the kennels will improve her health issue as this may all be stress related. She has had a bad start in life found on the streets at about 10/12 weeks old passed from here and there she deserves a second chance and I want to give her this she is so adorable.

Kennel cough is not really a fatal disease, and most vets don’t really “treat” it. Many recommend giving a cough suppressant (Robitussin is what’s usually suggested here in the States, I don’t know if that’s available in UK?) If you have other dogs and they are vaccinated and healthy, they may not get it from her, or they may. Like the common cold, there are many different strains of the virus that causes kennel cough and we only vaccinate for one. I took in a litter of pound puppies for rescue and they all had kennel cough. I gave them cough syrup and kept them warm, dry and calm (lots of activity kicks off a coughing binge). Two of my adult dogs also got it from them, but 2 didn’t. It ran it’s course in about 14 days and was really nothing more than being alarming hearing them hacking away.

You may find her shyness will let up when you get her home. Many dogs get nervous in a kennel environment, especially a stressful one like the shelter. I’ve pulled several rescues that seemed like crazies or horribly shy when I evaluated them at the shelter who calmed down quite a bit once away from all that. Puppies also develop through several “fear periods” (helps them learn what to be wary of if they were wild) and she’s spent at least one in that environment, which may also be why she seems nervous. She may still turn out to be just a bit shy when she gets home (usually soft, quiet dogs are more bothered by kenneling than the bold ones), but luckily she’s young yet. Behaviorists reccommend puppies need to meet 100 different people in the first 100 days you have them. Once she’s better, take her out for walks and have people pet her and give her treats. She should come around.
