Im quitting drugs and I need stuff to help me keep off of them?

I need to stop taking “snow” but are there any activites that will simulate the same feeling or help me keep off of cocaine?

First thing to do when stopping any drug is to see your doctor. He can examine you, do some blood work, and make sure you are physically healthy.

He can also advice you or refer you to someone who specializes in substance abuse.

It is important to be evaluated to determine how severe your problem is, what triggers you may have, why you started (and continued) using the drug, determine if you have any comorbid psychiatric problems like depression, anxiety, bipolar, or ADHD and address the withdrawal.

The best thing to do is have a physical medical evaluation then see a psychiatrist. There are medications that might help elevate withdrawal symptoms, most commonly withdrawal include depression, fatigue, hypersomnia, dysphoria, insomnia, unpleasant dreams, increased appetite, psychomotor retardation, and anxiety. In some cases people can become severely depressed and suicidal.

Typically most of these symptoms are short lived but depending on how long you used and how much you could experience acute or chronic anhedonia (inability to experience pleasure or joy) or you may have mild to severe depression and/or anxiety for months or years.

As part of an integrated plan, using medications can help. Use of a medication like diazepam for no more than a few days may help with anxiety and agitation. The similar drug temazepam (a hypnotic) may be beneficial for a few days to help provide better quality sleep sleep. Since these drugs can be abused they are normally limited to very short term use, especially in people with a history of substance abuse.

Many cocaine users find antidepressants like Effexor (venlafaxine), Wellbutrin (Bupropion), or Zoloft (sertraline) to be very helpful since they act on the same neurotransmitters cocaine acts on but not in an extreme way.

More recently there is evidence that using the drug Provigil (modafinil), a non-amphetamine stimulant can help. It is a schedule IV controlled substance (meaning the risk of abuse is low). Firstly if you would use cocaine when on modafinil it tends to blunt cocaine euphoria. Additionally its stimulating effects typically reduce the excessive sleep the lethargy cocaine addicts commonly experience. Several studies have all shown that cocaine addicts who used modafinil where more likely to stay clean, had fewer cravings, and no significant side effects occurred. Modafinil is not approved for this use but a psychiatrist in particular should know about this drug and using it in cocaine addicts.

It is also typically best to get therapy, some people find support groups very helpful, and others prefer AA/NA/CA programmes. It is very much a personal choice. In my opinion treating any underlying physical or psychiatric problem, along with one on one therapy and a support group is the most effective. I am not a big fan of AA/NA/CA but there are many other support groups.
