Dog Life Jackets Save Lives in Winter Too

A dog life jacket can save both dogs’ and people’s lives all year round. It is important that your dog wears a dog life jacket in winter as well as summer, if you are going to walk anywhere near water.

Freezing cold weather and temperatures as low as minus 17 degrees in some parts over the past few weeks in the UK, have meant that rivers and lakes have become more dangerous than usual to frequent.

Sadly, as usual the news has been full of headlines about both dog owners and dogs drowning. Undoubtedly some or indeed all of these fatalities could have been prevented if the owners had afforded their dogs the protection of a dog life jacket.

One report told how two young men were walking their dog alongside a river that had partly frozen and for some reason or other the Small Dog plunged in excitedly – perhaps chasing wildlife. The stout little dog was not wearing a dog life jacket and was instantly in trouble, fighting to keep above water and the dog owner at once dived into the river after his Best Friend. The conditions in the water were such that the current was so strong and the freezing cold temperature got the better of this fit and healthy young man and then his friend on the shore also jumped into the river to try and save his friend who was quickly getting carried away by the fast flowing river. Sadly both men were dragged under the murky water and lost their lives, along with the dog.

A dog life jacket keeps a dog’s head above water and works just like a life jacket worn by humans. The vital buoyancy that a dog life jacket provides means that the dog’s head will stay above water, therefore reducing panic, should the worst happen and the need for the dog to waste energy struggling. The dog can then concentrate on swimming to safety with the aid of the dog life jacket. Most dog life jackets have handles on the back that can be grabbed, making rescue easier – using a tree branch, or a stick to pull your dog
to safety with the grab handle. The protection a dog life jacket affords makes it less likely that a dog owner would instictively put their own life at risk to attempt to rescue their dog from dangerous waters. This would allow valuable time to call the emergency services and seek out a safe rescue method for your dog.

If you are going to walk anywhere near water of any kind, consider giving your dog the protection of a dog life jacket. If your dog normally wears a dog jacket in cold weather, a tip is to swap it for a dog life jacket and pop a doggy T-shirt or hoodie underneath for extra warmth – this does work, as I tried this with both my labrador and westie dogs in summer this year in the safety of a friend’s swimming pool with me standing right next to them whilst they swam around!

A dog life jacket doesn’t cost much at all but your dog not wearing one when out walking anywhere near water, could cost lives.
