Introducing new dog to adult cat and two 5 month old kittens?

I rescued a cat approx 8 months ago from being a stray found in a city centre. She adapted well to living in a house and was pregnant, eventually giving birth to kittens which are now 5 months old (cat has since been spayed!) Everything is great with them. I’m currently in the process of rescuing a 2 year old male German Shepherd. He’s got a great nature: I bought him home yesterday to see how he was with cats & he didn’t bark or seem bothered by them at all. I’d say he’s live with cats before. The cats however didn’t react well at all. I kept them separate rooms with glass doors for the introduction. Both kittens were hissing and just ran off upstairs at first opportunity. Mum cat was hissing/spitting/growling and at one stage body-slamming the glass doors! I tried introducing them in the garden – watching each other at a distance, but she continued hissing quite badly. I’m not expecting instant friendship, but the dog should be coming home this week! Any ideas how to make it easier?

It will take time for the cat to adjust to the new dog.

I have several indoor cats and several dogs. I have a gate across the door way to one room. It’s high enough off of the ground that the cats can go underneath it but low enough that the dogs can’t. This gives the cats a safe room.

Don’t force the issue. If the cats want nothing to do with the dog, so be it. They will slowly adjust and get curious enough to come check out the dog at a distance. Just give them a place that they can seek refuge until the learn that the dog is not a threat.
