Symptoms of Culture

Symptoms of Culture

The symptoms of culture are the anxieties that underlie modern life: the instability of gender roles, the mystery of female sexuality, the enigma of authority, the desire for greatness in ourselves and our heroes. With style, learning, and wit, Marjorie Garber teases out the symptoms of our cultural discomfort — the troubles lurking in our pleasures, and even the pleasures we take in what makes us itch. From concern over fake orgasms to our worries about Great Books reading lists, from wanting God on our side at sports contests to wanting Shakespeare on our side whenever we want to sound important, we are a walking case of symptoms. Whatever the modern illness may be, the doctor locates the symptoms in a box of Jell-O or in Charlotte’s marvelous web, on the football field or in the bedroom, in our great Mr. Shakespeare, in the classroom or the courtroom, or in a sneeze.

Symptoms in the Pharmacy

Symptoms in the Pharmacy

$71.95

Symptoms in the Pharmacy presents a guide to the management of common symptoms seen in the pharmacy, with advice from an author team that includes both pharmacists and GPs. With the continued emphasis on the pharmacist’s role as a ‘first port of call’ in response to symptoms, the need for effective communication and interpersonal skills remains paramount. This book provides the pharmacist with the appropriate techniques for gathering information to meet the needs of patient safety in a way that is acceptable to the public. Case studies and comments from the pharmacist’s and doctor’s perspective are included throughout. This is now the fifth edition of Symptoms in the Pharmacy. The text has been fully revised to reflect the latest ‘prescription only medicine’ to ‘pharmacy medicine’ switches. Changes in medicine use, cautions and contraindications where recent evidence has shown new safety concerns are also covered. Similarly, where new evidence has shown treatments to be less effective and thus superseded, they have been removed. Reviewer: A reader from Bradford UK This book is an excellent guide for either trainee or newly qualified pharmacists. It covers most ailments which may be encountered on a daily basis in the community pharmacy and describes features of more serious underlying disease to aid diagnosis or referral. It is well presented and clearly laid out with separate chapters for each ailment. At the end of each chapter are example case studies giving in summary both the view of a pharmacist and medical doctor for each condition. My only criticism is that there are no illustrations or diagrams which I feel would have been helpful when describing clinical features of some conditions. Nonetheless there are clear descriptions of each ailment, highlighting symptoms, possible causes and most appropriate treatments. Importantly it gives clear guidelines on when to refer presenting ailments to a doctor. It is comparable in style to the title Minor Illness or Major Disease, however this title is illustrated with photographs of illness to aid recognition. A useful guide for all student pharmacists, preregistration pharmacists and possibly newly qualified pharmacists.

Blessed by Illness

Blessed by Illness

$9.44

The prevailing attitude in modern medicine is that illness should not exist. Consequently, millions of research dollars pour each year into medical science and technology in the hope of eradicating various sicknesses and diseases. Patients and doctors alike suffer the terrible consequences of this impossible quest for material perfection. Yet, there is an alternate view-that human beings and human evolution are great enough to include "illness" as an essential part of existence. In the first part of Blessed by Illness, the author traces the history of our changing concept of healing, from the so-called temple sleep of ancient Egypt-when spiritual science tells us that human beings still had a living connection with the spiritual hierarchies-through the herbal lore of ancient Greece and the healings of Christ, to the rise of modern medicine, based primarily on treating symptoms. The practice of modern medicine focuses merely on removing discernable symptoms and ailments. The author, however, asserts that this does not really heal at all. Rather, true healing considers the whole human being. And, to do this, doctors must learn the language of our natural, healing life forces, which affect not only the body, but also nature and the greater cosmos. From this perspective, illness is actually a gift, a blessing that urges both patient and doctor to work together with our illnesses for the sake of something infinitely greater-true healing. Blessed by Illness is a powerful introduction to "alternative" methods of healing.

One of the few psychiatrists with formal training in molecular biology, Barondes offers an unusual perspective on the symptoms and treatment of mental illness. Passages written by patients and their families describing their illnesses, the frustrations of being diagnosed, and the concessions and adaptations they make are interspersed with Barondes’ text and provide a human counterpoint. With biological research playing an increasingly important role in modern psychiatry and the treatment of patients, Molecules and Mental Illness is a timely, important book for patients and professionals alike.
