Head Collar

Help, my horse won’t stand still to take off his head collar when I turn him out. Any advice?

He tries to run off, spins round and barges into me! He doesn’t do it all the time, just goes through periods where he gets worse.
I do turn him to face the gate and have tried treats/carrots…the problem is that he is really jittery and will not stand still. I just can’t get his attention on me because he is so desperate to go! He is really easy to handle in every other way and not at all bolshy in other respects.

When you go to turn him out unbuckle his halter and slide it down his neck and rebuckle it (behind his ears). When he tries to run off give the lead rope a sharp tug and say “WOAH.” Click your fingers and make his ears turn to face you, so you know he is paying attention to you. Then give him a treat. After he is fully paying attention to you, give him a pat, “Good Boy“, and turn him loose!
Try that for a few days in a row and he will start to be more attentive to you. My horse is a rascally little booger, too. But I notice if I make sure to make him pay attention to me first (via signals and treats) he calms down and respects me much more.

ETA: Wrapping the halter around his neck is a trick a lot of handlers use. It also works for slipping the bridle on without the horse running off. If the horse if running off when the halter is coming off, a stud chain won’t work. And you NEVER pull a stud chain hard. That’s where I stopped reading your post seriously. If you think a stud chain cannot harm a horse you are dead wrong. I watched a man pull a stud chain hard enough to rip flesh off a horses bottom jaw line once. I, personally only run them up the side of a halter so they make noise instead of hurting the horse.
Also, if you look at how a horses skin hangs off its skull (look up pics of a horses skull) you will see how the bones on the nostil area run jagged. This is why many respected horse people don’t use twitches any longer.
