anyone else ever have trouble with housing and state aids?

over 3 years on that list and seeing these others move in our area that drink do drugs and fight yet being a family of three i asked for a two bedroom and they say 1 then after all this time they claim they do not have one in domestic or handi capped and see them moving in and out every few weeks.

Whether it private or public housing that’s state aided you’re going to have problems unless they’re desperate for renters. That’s why it’s so important to know your rights and whom to contact if violated.

The one in our town used to pick and choose whom they wanted. No complaints were filed so they got by with it for years because no one else sees the list unless there is a complaint filed.

Depending on whether it’s govt. owned or subsidised makes a difference too. In one instance I know of the company actually preferred troublemakers because when evicted they could keep the deposit & tell the govt. they left various items in disrepair so the govt. would give them the money to fix it. Usually they’d add on other things that either didn’t need fixing or was from normal wear & tear that should have been part of routine maintenance. Since the govt. reimburses following a set guideline that’s usually higher than the average they end up profitting even more. Then if they get someone else in right away it starts all over again. This is a large portion of the waste in HUD. If no one reports abuse, nothing gets done.

Back in the early 70s you could rent a nice house here for $200. a month. But the privately owned, govt. sudsidised 2 bedroom apt. with no extras got $367. a month. At the same time in the largest city in the state you could rent a two bedroom apt. w/ tennis court, clubhouse, wall to wall carpeting, central heat/air, swimming pool, security, 24 hr. daycare & w/i walking distance of all the major malls & on the busline for only $325. a month plus electric.

I’ve even seen cases where landlords own apt. buildings & only allow a set number to be subsidised on another HUD program. HUD paid them $310. while the regular renters only paid $200. a month.

That’s why you need to find out whether it’s privately or govt. owned & what HUD program it’s on, as there are several. But as a rule if they receive govt. subsidies they have to get prefrential treatment to elderly and/or disabled first.

You can get angry but nothing will change unless you quit just griping to those who can do little to nothing & take positive action. Find out your rights, file a complaint with your state HUD office, contact the elder law in your state or in D.C., contact Legal Aid & often even AARP has links & numbers online or by phone to places that can help. Except for your time it’s all free. Plus the really cool side benefit is often as they investigate they will uncover other fraud that helps others.

Meanwhile take notes of when they move in & out of these various apts. Keep records of everyone who you talk to both on the phone & in person with names, dates & times. Besides being a reminder of things told, reasons, excuses, lies, etc. & by whom you’re also creating a paper trail in the event they try to dispute what’s said or should they be prosecuted.
