Half Choke Dog Collars
What is a good collar to stop a dog from pulling on walks?
I have an 18 week old beagle/foxhound mix who I’ve had for about a month and a half and she’s getting big, fast. We walk her for at least an hour a day, and she’s starting to pull really hard. She does it so much that she’s choking and her eyes will start to bulge. That can’t be good for her throat. We’ve been trying the usual advice such as jerking on her collar and telling her “no,” stopping until she calms down, and turning around and going the other direction, but none of the are working. She’s just so excited all the time.
So my question is what is a safe, effective type of collar or harness to use to help us control her? We have her in puppy classes and the trainer suggested a gentle leader. (The type that has two loops, one around their mouth and the other around their neck) But I really don’t feel that those are safe because if another dog bites her I want her to be able to use her mouth to defend herself, just in case
Have you tried stopping every time she pulls? Then give a treat when she comes back to you. It worked pretty well for my dog, who also pulls. You could also increase the distance or speed of her walks – Beagle’s are energetic and need lots of exercise.
Puppies are also just generally excitable. She’ll grow out of it the more you work with her – usually when she’s gotten used to your neighborhood and the sights/sounds/smells.
Collars and Halti’s are just tools – they only work if you have them on. You need to back them up with proper obedience training or you’ll need to use them the rest of the dog’s life (in most cases.)
I use a Prong collar on my dog due to her lunging at other animals. It may sound cruel but if in another couple of months your dog doesn’t settle, try one of them – it gets their attention a lot quicker and does NOT hurt them. I’ve used it on my arm and it pinches, but doesn’t draw blood OR puncture the skin.
Prongs are also a lot safer than other types of Training Collars – like the Slip Collar. Those do more damage to dogs that pull because continuous pulling means no time for correction, the collar just cinches up and chokes the dog. The thinness of it also means that it could damage the trachea just by using a correction!
Harness of any sort encourage pulling – that’s what they’re designed for, to make it more comfortable for the dog so it doesn’t choke. I have yet to find one that works on my dog (which is why i went with the Prong), even the “no pull” brands weren’t enough to deter my stubborn girl!
The Gentle Leader may work, but when i used it i found a few problems with it. One, when a dog lunges the head is snapped around by the head halter – it could damage the neck muscles pretty easily. Two, by limiting the movement of her head she got even more frantic around other dogs and animals – probably because the head halters limit their own control over their head.
Ask you trainer to teach you heel NOW, so you can get a head start on that. Also ask for other ways to train the dog not to pull (other than using tools.)
