Suicidal Behavior $28.84 Practice-oriented, evidence-based guidance on assessment, management and treatment of suicidal behavior-one of the most devastating problems in modern society. Almost one million people die worldwide by suicide each year, making it one of the leading causes of death throughout the lifespan. Suicide attempts outnumber deaths by suicide by a ratio of at least 25: 1, those who attempt suicide are at high risk of later death by suicide, and suicide risk is one of the most frequent reasons for admissions to inpatient psychiatric units. Treatment of those at risk for suicide is thus a pressing priority. Research over the past two decades has led to the development of excellent empirically supported treatment methods. This book aims to increase clinicians’ access to empirically supported interventions for suicidal behavior, with the hope that these methods will become the standard in clinical practice. This book is both a compact "how-to" reference, for use by professional clinicians in their daily work, and an ideal educational resource for students and for practice-oriented continuing education. Structured similarly to others in the series, it is a "reader friendly" guide covering aspects of the clinical assessment, management and treatment of those at risk for suicide. It makes liberal use of tables, boxed clinical examples, and clinical vignettes, and other tools, for use in daily practice. The book, which also addresses common obstacles in treating individuals at risk for suicide represents an essential resource for anyone working with this high risk population. |

Equine Behavior: A Guide for Veterinarians and Equine Scientists $133.45 Equine Behavior: A Guide for Veterinarians and Equine Scientists is the quintessential reference for all who really want to know what makes horses tick. Research in horse behavior has made great strides in recent years. This book examines the truth behind modern trends and ancient traditions. Full of insight, it rounds up the latest findings of practitioners and researchers from all over the world, drawing on both cutting-edge research and best practice. With more than 1,000 references, the book explores equine behavior from first principles, by considering the behavior of free-ranging horses and focusing on ways in which management and training influence the responses of their domestic counterparts. Equine physicians, trainers, handlers and owners all need to be students of equine behavior, because the first sign of a problem is often a change in behavior. So, whether you own, ride, lead, groom, feed or heal horses, what you observe is vital to your understanding. Behavioral problems in the stable and under saddle are a grave concern for equine veterinarians worldwide, because they can lead to poor performance, welfare issues, abuse and, ultimately, wastage. Traditionally, veterinarians gave priority to the physical health of their equine patients. This book is a unique attempt to demonstrate the way science can throw light on how and why problems and unwelcome behaviors arise. It also offers ways to bring about change for the better. Beautifully illustrated with photographs and line diagrams, Equine Behavior: A guide for veterinarians and equine scientists is an essential resource for practising veterinarians, students and enthusiasts with a specific interest in horses, ponies, and donkeys. Professional trainers and handlers, equine scientists and behavior therapists will also find its contents invaluable. |

Understanding Applied Behavior Analysis $19.95 Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is based on the premise that behavior can be influenced by changes in environment and by the reinforcing consequences of that behavior. This introductory guide to ABA demystifies the basic terminology, the underlying principles, and commonly-used procedures of ABA using accessible, everyday language. Albert J. Kearney explains the kinds of learning and reinforcement processes that form the basis of ABA programs. Having covered these essential principles, he describes how the science of behavior analysis can be effectively applied to real life behavior problems. He looks at how behavior is assessed and various intervention techniques that are often employed with children who have autism and other special needs. Having laid these essential foundations, Kearney touches on more advanced topics: the applications of ABA in behavioral education, such as precision teaching and programmed instruction. Clear, accessible, and with a structure that is easy-to-follow, this book is an essential introduction to the discipline of ABA and its applications for parents and professionals. |

It fills a void that currently exists for families trying to figure out how to do a VB approach. Furthermore, it explains a great deal about how ABA approaches behavior and teaching. Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior and works particularly well with children with minimal or no speech abilities. This step-by-step guide provides an abundance of information about how to help children develop better language and speaking skills, and also explains how to teach non-vocal children to use sign language. Handbook of Positive Behavior Support $99.48 With its origins and conceptual underpinnings in the applied behavior analysis arm of psychology, positive behavior support (PBS) emerged during the 1980s as a comprehensive approach to addressing the need for community support for persons with disabilities who engage in challenging behavior. As a field of endeavor, PBS has experienced phenomenal growth over a span of 25 years and is now an integral component of public education in many schools in practically every state in the United States. As an applied science of human behavior, PBS brings together the precision of a careful, analytical examination of the functions of problem behavior and relies on a broader framework of person-centered values to guide support through teaching alternative skill repetoires. Therefore, PBS involves a conceptual shift in addressing challenges presented by difficult behavior associated with disabilities – this shift is away from a direct and focused effort to simply reduce the occurrence of such behavior (sometimes with the use of punishing consequences) to a comprehensive values-based approach that eschews highly aversive consequences in favor of a teaching model focused on both the person and the person’s total life span or ecology. Currently, the field of positive behavior support offers a significant and expanding scientific basis for the functional analysis of problem behavior – that is, behavior that impedes learning and development and that, if not addressed, may result in a seriously diminished quality of life for those affected. PBS is now conceptualized as a risk-prevention system applicable at three levels of intervention: ]Universal, or primary applications, directed to all members of a specialized social ecology (e.g., a school). Universal, or primary applications, directed to all members of a specialized social ecology (e.g., a school). Group, or secondary intervention, directed to a specific group or aspect of the total ecology, (e.g., a classroom). Individual, or tertiary interventions, directed to individual supports. At all three levels, the process begins with a systematic examination of the total context in which behavior of interest is manifest and addresses interventions that are concerned with each individual’s well-being and overall quality of life rather than directing efforts to make individuals "fit in" to existing systems. At teritary levels of intervention, the process begins with a systematic examination of the total context in which problem behavior occurs, including preceding "setting events," biological factors, antecedent occurrences, environmental arrangements, learning styles and histories, and immediate as well as long-range consequences for problem behavior. The science of delineating functions of behavior is called functional behaviorial assessment (FBA). Results of FBA are then directed to a set of teaching interventions with a system focus which may |

Foraging: Behavior and Ecology $50.19 Foraging is fundamental to animal survival and reproduction, yet it is much more than a simple matter of finding food; it is a biological imperative. Animals must find and consume resources to succeed, and they make extraordinary efforts to do so. For instance, pythons rarely eat, but when they do, their meals are large–as much as 60 percent larger than their own bodies. The snake’s digestive system is normally dormant, but during digestion metabolic rates can increase fortyfold. A python digesting quietly on the forest floor has the metabolic rate of thoroughbred in a dead heat. This and related foraging processes have broad applications in ecology, cognitive science, anthropology, and conservation biology–and they can be further extrapolated in economics, neurobiology, and computer science. "Foraging "is the first comprehensive review of the topic in more than twenty years. A monumental undertaking, this volume brings together twenty-two experts from throughout the field to offer the latest on the mechanics of foraging, modern foraging theory, and foraging ecology. The fourteen essays cover all the relevant issues, including cognition, individual behavior, caching behavior, parental behavior, antipredator behavior, social behavior, population and community ecology, herbivory, and conservation. Considering a wide range of taxa, from birds to mammals to amphibians, "Foraging" will be the definitive guide to the field. |
