Grooming Clipper Trimmer

Help with Shitzu grooming ?

I have a male shihtzu, who loves going outside and rolling in mud!
He did have quite long hair so i bathed him regulary, brushed him everyday and trimmed his hair, but then straight after he would go outside and roll in mud, or go in the wind, so anyway i went away for a week and my family were looking after him and forgot to groom him and now he is covered in matts, ive tried to cut them as close to the skin as i can but i cant get the clippers or a comb through his hair, i have cut it shorter though, any adivce?!
i dont really want to take him to the groomers as he really doesnt like it!

I know what your going through. I have a 2 yr. old male shihtzu and its hard to keep him groomed. Water will give him matts and its important to blow dry him right after he gets wet. Also, the groomer told me that friction from carpet will also matt them. They sell special clipper attachments for this problem. My dog also hates groomers, but he hates baths, etc. It seems like he’s scared of everything!!!!
