Grooming Clipper Blade

Dog Grooming snap on combs?

My dog grooming book suggest that for a yorkie teddy bear cut that I use a #30 blade with clipper attachments. My question is; which leaves the hair longer a 1, 1 1/2, or a 2 ? Does the hair remain longer with each increase in number for guard or does it get shorter?

I am not a groomer but I believe the larger numbers take off more hair

Maybe a groomer will be of more help, sorry
