Grannicks Bitter Apple

Has anyone ever been told to squirt Grannick’s bitter apple INTO the dog’s mouth?

I have a 3 month old lab/poodle mix (the cutest mutt ever!) that bites our hands like crazy. My mom brought me Grannicks bitter apple and the lady at PetCo told her to spray it directly into his mouth. While effective, this does not seem right. Anyone know about this or maybe even have other ideas on the biting?

That is not right.

Bitter apple is the best taste deterrent but it needs to be put on the thing you want the puppy to avoid mouthing. Spraying it in the puppies mouth will just make everything taste awful and train him in any way.

For hand nippers it is best applied to gloves as otherwise you’ll forget and eat a sandwich (Yuk – it doesn’t wash off easily)

You can use a water pistol to shoot at the dog as a distraction but some puppies enjoy this game. Having cans with coins or pebbles taped in to throw down near the puppy can be useful but it depends on the puppy. What works for a bold puppy may be too much for a shyer one.
