Why does my cat fear his new bed?

I just bought a new cat bed yesterday. Its removable pillow-like cushion is dark brown soft fur, with a tan border on the inside. I thought he would love sleeping on soft fur, as he loves kneading on an old crochet blanket. But when I tried to put him into the new bed, he clawed & hung on to me as if the bed would kill him!

Why does the new furry bed frighten him? What can I do to get him to sleep in that bed? The weather is getting much colder at night now.
