Is it ok to keep a female and male dog in the same house ?

I currently have a male dog, but my friend is giving away her 2 year old female dog, im trying to persuade my mum to let me have her. But would it be ok to keep them both in the same house. Or will the female or even male keep marking their territory ?

I have five dogs. Two of which are not neutered or spayed. We just keep them separated when My girl is in heat..
