Is it time to replace my old Compaq Presario?

I got an older model Compaq Presario from someone. Since WinXPs latest software glitch (WGA validation tool) I’ve had to reformat my hd numerous times in an attempt to get the computer working right. Now the computer shuts down without warning, refuses to read CDs (I’ve replaced the cd drive). Now it won’t run for very long on any OS (I’ve tried Win98, WinXP, several versions of Linux).

First some background information to help with your answer. We had a pretty bad lightning storm here a week ago. Lightning struck twice within 50 feet of our house. I’m worried it might have gotten the computer even though I use a surge protector. Also the computer is pretty old, at least 7 years.

Should I just replace the computer and cut my losses? Any ideas on what might be wrong with it? I’ve tried everything that I know to do.

Replace it! Seven years is five years too long to go without replacing a computer. New ones are so inexpensive these days! But do
replace it before the new VISTA operating system comes out. I can just about guarantee that there will be peripheral hardware and software programs that will not run on VISTA. That was surely the case for me when XP came out. I wound up throwing out several clip art and game software programs I had. I also couldn’t get a driver for my printer.

I know they are great for power fluctuations, but I am not sure that the inexpensive surge suppressors work for lightening strikes. We had a suppressor on our downstairs television and it still got fried when lightening hit the house.
