i want to create a mosaic top on my coffee table and end table not sure how to get started?

i have a coffee table and end table i want to put a mosaic design on top and paint the rest. ive never done this before and not sure how to get started. what kinds of materials can i use? for the grout to hold them down is there certain brands i should and shouldnt use? any advice on how to get started.

Answer 1 offers some good suggestions. I’ll just add my thoughts. I tile nearly every day of my life, and many Mosaic applications are accomplished with plaster, though certainly thin set can be used. BRAND names aren’t as important as who is happy with their choices.

First of all the current surface should at least be scuffed up, offering some GRIP ability for whatever adhesion substance you choose. Then, and if possible you should probably consider the EDGES, and whether or not you want to extend the mosaic or STOP it just at the perimeters of the horizontal. If you want ONLY the TOPS done, then you should consider framing the edges, even if only to DAM the substance used for the mosaic, at a height you expect the surface to eventually be, above the sub surface. Lattice can work for that. IF you want the mosaic to extend at the sides/edges, you may have to add lumber to flush at the underside of any overhang, and DAM it again allowing a smooth consistent Bottom line.

Depending on your design, which we can’t know, many mosaics use the substance that adheres them to a point where that substance becomes the grout, squeezed up around each piece and wiped away as you’d have to do with grout, after the fact, anyway. Certainly that depends on what you want to achieve as a final look. Thinset for example as a GROUT would look like concrete when dry. Plaster would be White. So much of the procedure depends on your pattern, design, type of tile.

Just another note: Buy a grout sponge and use it in 3 stages increasing the WET as the grout sets, which will happen faster than the mortar used. Sanded grout is only standard when grout lines are approx. 1/4 inch, larger lines, are NON sanded grout By the final WIPE, what will be left will be powder, easily wiped away with anything.

In either case the mortar and/or grout should be mixed to a consistency like mashed potatoes, and applied in manageable working areas. Grout, if you choose to use it, will begin to set up faster, and should be stirred as you work, unless your area is small enough to do the entire surface in one pass, then wiped, Barely damp, increasing the wet as it sets.

Another issue with mosaic as it is with regular tile sheets, is level. That might depend on what you’re using and pressing with a small piece of lumber, and checking level/flush with your fingers, palm, etc.
